Job seekers turn to temporary staffing agencies during economic recession

Posted By: Jamila Simmons In: Customer Service
With the unemployment rate at its worst, job seekers find new alternatives in finding employment with the use of temporary staffing agencies.
Temporary Staffing during a recession:

After relocating to Brooklyn, NY, Aaron Walker, 26, thought job hunting in the big apple would be an easy task. However, once the media announced to the public that the United States was in an economic recession, Walker’s two week time limit of finding employment stretched drastically to three months.

With major companies cutting back on the number of employees, the common ways of finding jobs such as scamming through the newspapers has lead to numerous dead ends, leaving Americans to find different alternatives to search for employment.

“I was really about to give up and move back home,” said Walker who had been a resident of Hampton, Va. for seven years, “the easy ways to find jobs were now becoming the hard ways to find jobs.”

However, Walker’s luck changed when his friend introduced him to a website that collaborated with major job search engines to provide a plethora of job listings and temporary staffing agencies.

Since companies were not responding, Walker decided to send his resume to a local staffing agency. The following day he was called for a formal interview and two weeks later, he was offered a full time position at Cablevision.

Temporary staffing has increase significantly during the recession and has been a resort that job seekers have turned to.

Finding a staffing agency is simple and easy. The quickest way is to search online for the major agencies such as officeteam.com or search for local staffing agencies in a particular location.

Applying for a job with a staffing agency requires registering on the website, submitting a resume through e-mail or directly to the website or visiting an agency in person. 99% of the time, the staffing agency will have a representative contact the job seeker at least 48 hours of receiving their resume.

Staffing companies vary in the jobs that they offer, from clerical/administration to customer service. Although most agencies are well connected to different companies, it is not always guaranteed that a job seeker will be assigned employment, therefore it is important to register with more than one agency.

However, staffing agencies are well connected to different employers and have a plethora of jobs that vary from clerical/administration to customer service positions.
Although most are temporary positions, some jobs can turn into permanent ones. According to about.com, two million people per day are employed by staffing companies and over 79% of temps work full time.

“The temporary staffing company changed my life, said Walker, "they did all the searching for me and that took a lot of stress off me."
